How To Prepare A Book Promotion Package
Tips for creating a book promotion package for your latest novel to hand out to possible interviewers.
If you’re a writer then you know how difficult it can be at times to promote your published works. Getting the word out to the public that your work is available can be frustrating, tiresome, and sometimes even aggravating. BUT IT MUST BE DONE! Without it your masterpiece could simply sit on a shelf collecting dust or, in the case of e-books, sit on a file out in cyber space forever. You’ve put to much work into writing that masterpiece to allow that to happen, haven’t you?
So you get out there and approach people, tell them about your work but you need something physical to hand them. You need a visual aid to attract them to your masterpiece. Handing out a complete copy of your novel to everyone you come in contact with will not only quickly become expensive but you will be giving away potential profits. Look around you. Everyone you see is a prospective reader. Instead of giving your work away why not entice people to read it?
Give them just a taste of what they can look forward to if they purchase the complete novel. Do this by handing them a teaser packed with information in a neat little press package and you’re one step closer to killer sell status!
Here is just one of the many ways you can prepare your teaser package.
1: With any book, the cover is the first thing that one sees and catches a reader's attention. You want to make the cover of your press package just as eye catching as the book itself. If you are promoting one novel use the cover for that novel. When promoting more than one novel at a time put smaller pictures of the covers for each novel. Of course you also want to put your name and something like "novel sampler" somewhere on the page.
2: While the demand for electronic books is growing more day by day, there are still many people who have no clue what they are or how to find them. If you are promoting an e-book, a single page with a few paragraphs explaining a bit about the e-book industry, how the books can be read, and how they can be bought is a good way to educate your reader on the future of books.
3: In any promotion you do you want people to know a little about you. Sure, they know you are a writer but what else? Your promotion package should include a biography. Toot your horn! Tell them about yourself, how you got into writing, and anything fun or interesting about yourself. And by all means, don't forget your contact information (phone number, address, e-mail, etc.). Any way you can possibly be reached. You never know when that big career breaker is going to call!
4: About the book. When promoting more than one at a time it's a good idea to put a small picture of the cover at the top. Next you will want to put the specifics about the title (publisher, available formats, ISBN#, release date, etc.), a short summary of the book (about a paragraph or two will do), any reviews you may have obtained (good ones of course), and an excerpt from the book. Follow all of this with a paragraph about the publisher and the different places the books are sold. Repeat the steps above for each book you are promoting.
5: Enclose all the information in a nice little package. Report covers work wonderfully for this. You can find them at your local Wal-Mart or any office supply store. They are inexpensive and professional looking, too.
6: Now it's time to promote. Take your promotion package to anyone you can think of—bookstores, newspapers, television studios, radio stations. Ask to speak to the promotion manager or, in the case of bookstores, ask for the manager. If you can't see that person personally, drop the package off for them. Then after a week or two if you haven’t heard from them follow up with a polite phone call or return visit. Introduce yourself, tell them what you do, and what you’re looking for (interview, signing, etc.). Take a copy of your press package along with you in case they lost the copy or left behind or didn’t receive it at all.
7: Finally start preparing for interviews and signings. If you ask for them they will come!
